In making short films it is not difficult and expensive. Making simple short films only requires cassette costs and research costs. But the strongest thing before making a short film must have a story idea that can later develop and continue.
We must determine the focus of the story from our film. For example, during a birthday party. So, the focus of the story is a birthday party. Or when going to an entertainment place, focus on the story of the entertainment place, for example, A Day in the Fantasy World …
After we determine the focus of the story, just follow these steps
1. Early Research
We first find out about the background we want to make a film. If serious, this research should be very detailed, but if you want it simple, we can just browse the internet first or ask friends or people who have experienced it. We record the data that we got earlier as reference material.
2. Prepare Equipment
The equipment needed is any camcorder or video camera along with the battery and charger. Don’t forget to bring additional microphones and extension cables, tripods, and most importantly, blank tapes
3. Field Research
When we arrive at our destination, we have to do more research from the initial research that we have done at home. Match the data obtained during initial research with the conditions in the field.
The trick: can walk, chat, and hang out! Relax and try to be familiar with the environment that we will film.
4. Create a Storyline Rough
Determine who wants to be appointed as a character in the film. Usually, from the results of research in the field, we can get a more specific and interesting idea to be lifted from our initial ideas at home. For example, “The daily life of clowns in Dufan”. Then, make a rough storyline from the idea. For example, the tasks of the clown in Dufan and the places that must be visited by the clown.
5. Make a Synopsis
A short story about what kind of film we made. From the synopsis we can determine who we should interview, list questions for each interview, and list the images (footage) needed outside the interview.
6. Shooting or Shooting
From the results of research, we already know wherever and whenever the people we want to interview are located. There are several things that must be considered for shooting. The first, go and ask their permission to do an interview. Remember, never record interviews without permission! Unethical and can make them dislike.
Second, don’t forget to use additional microphones when conducting interviews, especially if we are in a crowd. Third, use a list of previously made questions as a reference, but don’t be too rigid, we may ask other things outside the list.
Fourth, make the interview atmosphere as relaxed as possible, ask as if we were chatting normally. Because, the existence of a video camera can make people nervous, jaim, and cannot answer honestly.
Fifth, use a tripod if the interview lasts long enough and is not done while moving. Sixth, complete all interviews from the list of people we have made. After that, record all the images that we have written in our footage list. If we still have time and spare cases, we may just record other additional images that might later be useful during the editing stage.
Seventh, after everything has been recorded. Check all the lists we have. Read our initial synopsis again. All is enough. Don’t forget something.
7. Create a Final Story Flow
Adjust the results of the notes with the results of the interviews that we have made. Are you still married? Should it be changed? Which direction should be developed?
This is very possible because the results of interviews can produce more data and may differ from what we have prepared before. No problem. Improve and create a new synopsis that can be compiled from the recordings that we have watched repeatedly.
After completion, the final synopsis can be a guide to start editing.
8. Editing Movies
Start capturing the recordings that we have previously selected into the computer using the editing program that we usually use. After that, compile our film based on the final synopsis that we have made before.
Enter the footage that we have recorded. Make the plot as attractive as possible, not too many interviews that can be boring. Ideally, the length of the film is 8-12 minutes.
9. Background Music or “Soundtrack”
Add the appropriate background music, don’t use people’s music at all! As much as possible make your own music or ask friends who are good at making music to make music
for this film.
10. Finally, color correction or “color correction”
Enter the opening title (choose a catchy title and can describe the whole film), add credit title, mix sound, wrap!
